Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the blow of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total fiasco. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a mess of epic proportions.

Dreadful Day Ever

It all started with a case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't figure it to look decent. As I was dashing out the door, I stumbled and spilled all over the floor. To make matters worse, I was extremely late for a very important appointment.

It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
